Elgato support has not been helpful on this issue, and for some reason I don't see it in their help forums, so I assume it's being removed on purpose.
ELGATO EYETV HD AMAZON SOFTWARE
This is VERY annoying, and a bug that I've experienced in multiple Macs, and ever since Elgator released version 2.x of their software (it's at version 3.x now).

So if you're unlucky and the pause didn't occur during a commercial break, then you're SOL and will need to start the recording over from the beginning. The recording will skip the amount of time paused i.e., if the video pauses for 10 seconds, the recording will continue in real time, 10 seconds from the time that it paused. Sometimes it takes longer than 10 minutes, and sometimes it never continues at all. Usually it'll continue after a few minutes. If you're lucky, the recording will continue within a few seconds. Sometimes the audio will keep going while the video is paused, but usually they'll both pause together. Video will suddenly pause in the middle of the recording. They've also removed the power supply so that it gets power over USB - that's a nice touch, and one less thing you need to find a power plug for.Ĭons: routinely crashes. Note: recording one hour of programming at this spec will use about 8.0 GBs of hard disk space, you'll need lots of storage. Now, the box has gotten bigger and I assume the've moved all that cabling inside (although they do have a smaller octopus cable for S-video). Gone is weird octopus cable which you used to need to connect all your AV wires into. This model is an improvement of their non-HD version. Elgato does have the best choices, by far, and I've used their products for some time. Toast, as I noted above, handles it the Blu-Ray Creator app from the App store cannot.Īs far as video recorders go, especially for Mac, there are not very many options. Is this a way to get the video without the lengthy "export" process? Sometimes, maybe. mpg file that is apparently the video in H.264 format. The special ".eyetv" files the app creates are in fact "packages." Right-click on one and select "Show Package Contents" and you find several files including a. As a rule of thumb, recording HD will fill 5-6 gigabytes per hour - so a 1TB external drive is good for a couple hundred hours of HD. Capturing at 1080p/30fps, about 150MB/minute. Notes after a few hours' use: when you capture at 760p/60fps, the saved file takes approximately 100MB per minute of recording. So if, like me, you plan to capture and burn to DVD or Blu-Ray, just use the EyeTV to capture the material, and do everything else in Toast. Toast's video editor is easy to use as well. However, I have found that Roxio Toast Titanium 11 is very happy to import EyeTV captures in their native form direct and add them to a DVD menu to burn. To use a captured clip in (for example) iMovie, you need to export to some other format because iMovie doesn't understand the format of the files in the EyeTV "Archive" where it keeps all captured video. The EyeTV app provides for "exporting" the things you capture in many different video formats. Whew! Big relief! So if you care about the picture quality, start with a careful review of all Preferences.

Selecting "Best" on this pop-up caused the EyeTV to immediately switch to 1080p 30fps. Unfortunately it was quite a crude image (540p?) I knew the DVR was pumping out 1080p HD, why wasn't I seeing that? After some exploring of the menus I found my way to EyeTV > Preferences > Devices tab > Quality pop-up menu. Immediately the image and sound also appeared on the screen of my laptop. If you want to sit more than arm's-length from the EyeTV (and you do) you need a longer USB cable or a USB extension cable. Next thing worth knowing: the supplied USB cable is very short.

I connected the EyeTV to the Component out jacks of the DVR (the DVR is also driving the TV over an HDMI cable but the same image is coming out the Component port as well), and by USB to my Macbook Pro. I'm sure that was clear in the description somewhere, but I didn't notice it. I was looking for some kind of wall-wart to plug in but no, it needs no other power than the USB cable.

From the package artwork I expected something like a Mac Mini but no, it's half that size.

So I have no plans to use the program scheduling functions or the IR blaster. I purchased this device in order to capture certain special programs from an existing HD DVR and save them as Blu-Rays.
